I have a friend from law school who loved fried chicken. Every time someone even mentioned fried chicken, she would have to eat some within a few days because she’d be craving it so much. I always thought this was hilarious but I am kind of the same way. Sometimes people will mention things and I think, “Wow! That sounds good!” and I won’t be able to stop thinking about it until I get me some. Just yesterday, Jaime Oliver was on Rachel Ray (him and his little food revolution!) making a cucumber salad that looked awesome. I now have a couple cucumbers in my fridge that I am insisting be used to replicate that dish. Another thing that can trigger a craving like that? Breakfast foods. I love dinery type breakfasts with overeasy eggs, hashbrowns, pancakes, etc. I rarely eat pancakes but every once in awhile, I want them something fierce.
I fear (or actually hope) that I will be in a perpetual state of craving pancakes here soon. You see, this whole nursing thing isn’t going quite according to plan. My supply is really low (yes, it has now been confirmed) and Jack simply isn’t getting enough. He starts screaming like a maniac at the end of each feeding and I have to give him a bottle to satisfy him and keep him from going bonkers. Of course, this is a bit frustrating for me. I did some research and it appears that there’s an herb (fenugreek) that can help boost a nursing mother’s supply. It’s an herb that’s used in many dishes and it’s primary use in the US (aside for the reason I’m taking it) is to give a maple syrup flavor to things like oatmeal when using real maple syrup is cost prohibitive. So anyway the biggest side effect of taking this fenugreek is, I kid you not, smelling like maple syrup. Yes, if fenugreek works for me, I will actually begin to smell like pancakes. So far, I’ve been taking it for 2 days and nothing. Not even a hint of a Denny’s Grand Slam. My supply is the same it’s always been. I’m getting a bit bummed out because I want to be able to satisfy this kid of mine. Plus, then I wouldn’t have to wear perfume because I’d have such a delightful aroma to me.
Of course one of the big reasons (aside from Jackaroo’s health) I am breastfeeding is to save money. If this fenugreek works, it may defeat the thriftiness goal because I’ll be constantly demanding that John take me to IHOP. Hmm…I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
By the way, in the middle of writing this, I decided to take another dose of the stuff in hopes that it would start working. I’m taking the suggested 3 pills 3 times a day but some women swear that you have to take much more than that for it to work. I decided to add one more dose in there and, lo and behold, I think I might smell a bit like syrup! I can’t tell though…afterall, I did just google “pancakes” and look through a bunch of pancake images. But I’m pretty sure I smell a teensy bit like a McGriddle. Yes, this is happening.

Oh, Molly, you make me smile. :) I'm sure you are aware, and have done plenty of research, but I thought I'd give a couple of other ideas I've heard from lactation consultants.
First, drinking enough water/fluids yourself is extremely important. I could always tell the days when I wasn't drinking enough.
There is also an organic tea called "Mother's Milk Tea" that is supposed to boost the milk supply. I've had a couple of friends try it and say they believe it works.
Oatmeal and malt (liked the candy, malt balls, or malt mix for shakes) are also supposed to increase the supply. I always had an overabundance, it seemed, and it could have been related to the oatmeal I'd have every morning. I wasn't trying to increase my supply; I just love oatmeal.
Finally, the most important is to not give up...the more the baby sucks/eats, the more the system will produce. Pumping isn't as natural of a sucking motion, but it will definitely stimulate the body.
None of this is probably new to you. I wish you luck!
thanks Molly! Now I need fried chicken...
