This past fall, we had quite the experience with parakeets. John kept the blog abreast of all the parakeet developments. First he spent weeks considering purchasing one. Then he convinced me that he’d take care of it and it wouldn’t get the house all messy and dirty.

Then he bought one and we named it Lou Ferrigno.

Then Lou Ferrigno flew away and we got Lou 2.

The Lou 2 died and we got Lou 3. At this point, we became worried that the parakeet community was spreading the word that it was dangerous to come home with the Campbells.

Lou 3 had a good time in the Campbell yard. He had a great cage and got to hang out in a warm aviary during the winter. Then last week, I walked by and noticed that Lou 3 was lying at the bottom of his cage. Seeing as how he is a bird, lying down is generally a bad sign. My mom and I tried to nurse him back to health but it didn’t work. I eventually had to come back home and tell John the sad news: Parakeet #3 bit the dust.
I think we can all agree that John and I should NOT be parakeet owners. I’m not sure what we’re doing wrong but we just cannot keep these little suckers alive! John finally agreed that we won’t buy a 4th Lou Ferrigno. I thought that was that. But then a couple days ago, he looked at me and said “I’m a little surprised that nobody got me a parakeet for my birthday.” Oh no…he still wants one? Parakeet community: FLY! Fly far far away from us! Consider yourself warned.
