This is John.
There’s a small community to our north here in San Antonio that we call Austin. It’s tiny compared to our massive metropolis, but nonetheless it holds a certain charm that attracts many people. In fact, Austin is the city young people go to retire. When Molly found out she had a meeting in the city, we decided we’d make a little family vacation out of it and we packed up the car and headed north.
Austin is interesting, because it’s a city ripped straight out of the book “What White People Like”. If it’s a “white” thing, then you can rest assured it’s in Austin. If it’s absurd, it’s also in Austin too. This is a conversation Molly and I had:
Molly: I bet that guy is on drugs.
John: What guy?
Molly: The guy that just rode by on his bike in a yellow frilly dress.
Austin was great fun. However, Molly had to go do work things and that left Jack and I to our devices. Here’s our story (as captured by my iPhone – which is a white thing to have).
There once was a young man named Jack. He loved cold things, but couldn’t eat ice cream because it would make his insides bleed. Literally. One day, Jack’s dad decided it would be a good idea to get some shaved ice. Sour apple was the flavor and when he tried it Jack got a sour apple face.
Jack loved his sour apple shaved ice. His dad also liked it, so his dad decided to share the shaved ice between the two of them. Jack hated that idea. When his dad would take a bite and keep the sour apple ice from him, Jack would cry. Of course, Jack was quite hungry.
So when the sour apple ice was done, they booked it back to the hotel room where Jack got to munch on his favorite balsamic noodles and his favorite vegetable, peas! Jack got stuffed. And when Jack gets stuffed in the middle of the afternoon, Jack get sleepy. So Jack and his dad took a little nap.
Jack hates to wake up. It’s the worst and usually there is crying involved. In this case, Jack just looked at his dad like waking up was the worst idea anyone could ever think of. Jack’s dad had to take desperate measures, so the two of them went swimming.
Before they could make it to the pool, Jack decided he would give it his best and work to find a new way to sit in his stroller. Invention achieved.
Jack loved the pool! The best part was that it was a saltwater pool and Jack LOVES salt. Therefore a good portion of the swim was Jack’s dad trying to prevent his son from drinking too much saltwater. Jack’s dad called Jack ridiculous.
Jack likes to ride on imaginary horses too, so Jack’s dad complied with his son’s desires.
The next day, Jack and his dad came home and Jack’s dad decided he would make Jack the ultimate shaved ice. However, this time the ice would be chopped and Jack’s dad would put lime juice in it. Jack loves sour stuff.
Unfortunately, when you feed cold stuff to a one year old too fast, they will get a brain freeze just like a 29 year old. It was a lesson Jack’s dad learned quickly that day. Jack thought his world was ending thanks to his brain freeze. It eventually went back to normal and Jack did some walking.

What a good dad you are making sure Jack gets to do all of the things HE enjoys best! Well except for the brain freeze...
