So these are actually last Tuesday's questions. I thought they were really good but I was too busy bragging on Brady last week to answer them. So you get them today instead.
Go to Chelsea's blog to join in!
1. How did your parents decide on your name?
I actually don't know. Oh great! Here I am holding these questions out to be the greatest thing since sliced bread and then I can't even answer the first question? Lovely. I think it was just an Irish name they liked and we are Irish...so there ya go. Not as Irish as Browyn but you get the point. Mom, are you reading? Why'd you choose my name?
2. Do your initials (First, Middle, Last) spell out anything fun/funny?
MEC. As I "Mec!!! That soup tastes terrible!" nothing like having your initials sound like someone is disgusted!
3. Did you take your middle name from childhood or did you take your maiden name as your middle name? (If unmarried, what do you plan to do?)
I kept my childhood middle name and took my husband's name. And honestly, it was tough.. I loved my maiden name, I loved the alliteration and I loved how it was so very Irish. But I believe that marriage is dying to yourself to go all in...doing things you may not want to do in order to show the other person how much you love them. Giving up my name was just one of the ways I could show John that I was in it to win it. I'm just lucky that I found a guy who is a one-upper and is even better at the whole "showing the other person how much you love them" thing than I am.
4. Are you or will you name your children thematically (ie. same first letter, all of same origin…)
No themes here. Jack is actually John and is named after his dad. Our next boy will be Elijah because we love it's meaning and it's derivation. Our first girl will be Christine after my mom. We are still deciding on a second girl's name. I want 4 kids so it could happen. But no. No themes.
5. Did you decide on baby names as a little girl? Did you stick to them or change your mind?
I always loved Matthan and Christof. John nixed them. But I nixed Udell for Jack...so I think it all evened out. (you're welcome, kid!) (don't be mad at me, john's parents)
As an aside, I once found this in my journal. It was written in 1997: "I know what I'm gonna name kids. Taylor, Tyler and Jorden. Isn't that awesome? It's for boys OR girls." so there ya have it....had my whole children's futures planned out when I was 13. Good, good.
6. Does your family have any names that have been passed down through generations?
John is the second John Udell. Jack was to be the 3rd. But we named him John Robert instead. I didn't know Udell (John's grandpa) but I've heard stories about him. And he doesn't sound near as awesome as John's dad, Robert. So I'm glad we ended that. I hope Jack will name his son "John" too and give him a middle name that means something important to him and his wife. Then it's a family tradition but something they make their own.
7. Do you look at the meaning of the name or just the name itself?
We like Biblical names. John means "God is gracious" and God's timing with Jack just fits with that meaning. Elijah means "the lord is my god" and was obviously a very important Biblical figure. Christine means "follower of Christ". So yes, they all have mean ins. But there are plenty of other good, Biblical names that will NOT be given to my children (i.e., Upharsin, Quarturnion) So it's a mix of sound and meaning.
8. Do you name pets with human names (Sally, Henry) or with pet names (Fluffy, Mr. Bo Bo)?
We only have dogs. And our dogs are only named after Presidents. We have Truman now and had Harrison who, like his namesake, only lasted a short while. I'll tell you what we DON'T name our dogs though: Molly. We don't name dogs Molly. Even though we seem to be the only ones on the whole freaking planet who refrain from doing so. Do you know that my own sister-in-law named her dog Molly? What is it about my name that makes people think, "I like it...but not enough to name a human that. How about something that doesn't last TOO long so that when I'm sick of saying 'molly' in 10 years, it won't be a problem?"
9. Are there any names that you have an affinity or dislike for based on a childhood experience/someone you once knew?
Yes. I don't like Jesse because of the kid I 7th grade who was mean to me and called me named even though HE was the stinky kid in class!!!
10. What are some of your favorite names? Why?
Obviously all the knaves of our kids/future kids. Still like Matthan too. I like Cecilia because it is a more feminine version of my grandma's name, Cecil (which was, in fact, a boy's name). I like Maureen and Elizabeth and, along with millions of dog owners out there, I do love Molly.

4. Kimberly is a nice name :P
9. SHE CAME WITH THE NAME MOLLY. We couldn't think of another name until you came across Libby, and ever since we have called her Libby. Though a few old friends who don't see us all the time still call her Molly then go "uh whatever your name is now".
6. More history on the whole John Udell thing. Our grandpa, John Udell was the child of John Henry & Dell (if Dad reads this correct me if I'm wrong), so was named John Udell. He then in turn named his first born John Udell (our uncle John) and then dad of course named his son John Udell (another interesting side note, I was supposed to be John Udell. Oops.)
Awww come on Molly....Kim renamed her dog to Libby when she realized you didn't feel honored...I think that Libby was called Molly when they got her from the pound...
